Natural deduction for belief at most

چکیده
We present a new approach to the logic of at most, introducing the notion of parametric propositions to modal natural deduction proofs. We apply the method with a natural deduction formulation of the doxastic logic N, a new system in the “only knowing” family. Using parametric proof rules, we give introduction and elimination rules for belief at most that directly match the natural second-order formulation of the concept. N is sound and complete with respect to the class of intended models. We conjecture that it weakly normalizes and that it satisfies the subformula property.

Sentences, Belief and Logical Omniscience, or What does Deduction Tell US?
We propose a model for belief which is free of presuppositions. Current models for belief suffer from two difficulties. One is the well known problem of logical omniscience which tends to follow from most models. But a more important one is the fact that most models do not even attempt to answer the question what it means for someone to believe something, and just what it is that is believed. W...
متن کاملAbout the Limitations of Logic-based Approaches to the Formalisation of Belief Fusion
In this paper, it is shown that logical approaches to the formalisation of belief fusion suffer from several drawbacks. A first one is due to the fact that the various epistemological roles of involved beliefs are not taken into account. As a result, the set-theoretic union operator is not necessary adequate for fusing beliefs even when such an operator delivers a consistent set of beliefs and ...
متن کاملAbductive Logics in a Belief Revision Framework ABDUCTIVE LOGICS IN A BELIEF REVISION FRAMEWORK
Abduction was first introduced by the philosopher C.S. Peirce in the epistemological context of scientific discovery. It was more recently analyzed in Artificial Intelligence, especially with respect to diagnosis analysis or ordinary reasoning. These two fields share a common view of abduction as a general process of hypotheses formation. More precisely, abduction is conceived as a kind of reve...
متن کاملTableaux for Diagnosis Applications
In [NF96] a very efficient system for solving diagnosis tasks has been described, which is based on belief revision procedures and uses first order logic system descriptions. In this paper we demonstrate how such a system can be rigorously formalized from the viewpoint of deduction by using the calculus of hyper tableaux [BFN96]. The benefits of this approach are twofold: first, it gives us a c...
متن کاملSecond-Order False-Belief Tasks: Analysis and Formalization
We first give a coarse-grained modal-logical analysis of the four best known second-order false-belief tasks. This preliminary analysis shows that the four tasks share a common logical structure in which a crucial role is played by a “principle of inertia” which says that an agent’s belief is preserved over time unless the agent gets information to the contrary. It also reveals informational sy...
